Contemporary Medical Acupuncture

Medical acupuncture is a biomedical approach to traditional acupuncture that is based on current concepts of neurophysiology, neuroanatomy, and pathophysiology.  Medical acupuncture patients undergo a thorough medical interview and physical examination by Dr. Troy Neufeld, MD, CAHP.  Treatments will be integrative in nature and will address the patient as a collective whole (mind, body, and spirit).

Naturopathic Medicine

Nova Health Naturopathic Centre focuses on providing primary medical care including full physical examinations, blood work on site, intravenous therapy for the treatment of cancer and other chronic diseases, acupuncture, diabetes management, nutritional guidance including the Naturally You Weight Loss Program, and botanical and neutraceutical therapies.

The Scope of Practice, Licensing and Education

Naturopathic medicine incorporates physiology, biochemistry and diagnostic advancements to understand 'why' the body is not functioning properly. NDs prescribe natural treatments to help the body overcome disease and regain health. NDs integrate the science of nature with the function of the body and treat each person on an individual level to attain optimal health.

What NDs Treat

NDs treat all conditions and all diseases. They are primary care practitioners who treat all ages from newborn to the elderly. NDs treat colds and flu, sports injuries, sleep disorders, cancer, heart disease, fibromyalgia, depression and anxiety, women's health issues such as infertility, PCOS, obesity, types I and II diabetes, arthrigias, pediatric ailments inclusive of autism, ADHD, food allergies, skin problems, and support and guidance is offered to those interested in general health promotion and weight loss.

Educational Requirements for Naturopathic Doctors

Undergraduate: As with any medical school, admittance to The Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine requires a minimum of three years of full time study at an accredited university with completion of courses in biology, biochemistry, general chemistry, organic chemistry and psychology.

Naturopathic medical studies: The graduate program consists of 4 years of study comprisong some 4,500 hours of educational and clinical training. Curriculum includes all conventional medical studies including anatomy (with cadaver dissection), pathology, differential diagnosis, pharmacology, labratory diagnosis, and scientific research methods. Further, courses include the core naturopathic modalities of Traditional Chinese Medicine, pharmacognosy (botanical medicine), clinical nutrition, therapeutic counseling, homeopathic medicine and manipulation. Training also involves a 1 year clinical internship composed of 1,500 hours, clinical training in outpatient facilities, as well as 100 hours preceptoring with practicing doctors (both NDs and MDs).

Licensing

Naturopathic students write two levels of licensing exams set by the North American Board of Naturopathic Examiners. On completion of the second year, exams are written on basic medical sciences. At the completion of the fourth year, exams are written on applied clinical studies and jurisprudence. The successful completion of these exams grants the restricted title of Doctor of NAturopathic Medicine. NDs are also required to attend continuing education courses each year.

In Ontario, NDs are licensed under the Board of Directors of Drugless Therapy - naturopathy (the BDDT-n). There are other practitioners with similar titles who do not have the license or training required to diagnose and treat patients. Such titles include Natural Doctor, Homeopathic Doctor or Holistic Doctor. Always ask to see the practitioner's credentials and license number.

Services:

Modalities

Standard medical training is combined with a broad range of natural therapies to get at the "root" cause of disease and help patients to achieve optimal health.

We fully assess the whole person, including physical, mental and emotional aspects. Treatments are individualized for each patient and may include the following:

Nutrition

Nutrition:

Nutritional deficiencies and intolerances have been associated with numerous medical conditions. Dietary modification, using specific foods for their healing properties, and nutritional supplementation can improve health concerns.  Food allergies and sensitivities are also assessed via blood work.  These foods can be eliminated from the patients diet, greatly improving health.

Botanical

Botanical Medicine:

Plants and plant extracts have been used throughout history to treat disease. Today, clinical research continues to prove the effectiveness of herbal medicine in disease treatment.  NDs are the only health care providers licensed to practice botanical medicine in Canada.

Nutrition

Lifestyle Counselling:

Not only are NDs are trained to counsel patients on topics such as diet and exercise, they also counsel patients for stress management and behaviour modification to help patients achieve their health goals.

Accupuncture

Acupuncture / Auricular Acupuncture

Dr. Neufeld's application of medical acupuncture is a "painless", precise peripheral nerve stimulation technique based on modern biomedical science and anatomy.  It is highly effective in a wide range of clinical applications from acute/chronic pain to musculoskeletal injuries, anxiety, insomnia, digestive disorders, gynecological disorders, smoking cessation, and much more.  Electroacupuncture, heat therapy, and auricular acupuncture techniques are also employed.

Physical Medication

Physical Medicine:

This type of medicine offered by NDs includes manipulation and adjustments of the spine and other joints for relief of back pain, carpel tunnel, tennis elbow, and posture correction.  NDs also offer soft tissue massage and hydrotherapy for acute and chronic muscle injuries, and exercise therapy to retrain muscles and strengthen joints.

Intravenous Bag

Intravenous Therapy:

Intravenous (IV) therapy involves delivering high doses of vitamins, minerals and nutraceuticals directly into the blood stream to provide rapid, effective healing and relief of symptoms. NDs require additional training and experience to perform this highly specialized medical treatment.

Intravenous therapy has documented benefits for treatment of the following conditions:
